How to download a GPX file

Want to turn your favourite ride, run or hike into a personalised map print?

First, you'll need the route from your GPS device or tracking app.

Don't worry if you're not familiar with GPX files. They're easy enough to find once you know where to look.

What's a GPX file?

A GPX file is simply a digital record of a route. It contains the GPS points that show where you've been, allowing us to turn your adventure into a personalised map.

Most cycling computers, GPS watches and route-planning apps let you download one.

Our map builder accepts GPX, TCX and KML files.

Where did you record your adventure?

Strava

The easiest option — connect directly!

If you use Strava, there's no need to download a file. You can connect your account directly to our map builder and choose an activity.

Create your TrailMap with Strava

Prefer to download a GPX file yourself?

  1. Open Strava in your web browser and sign in.
  2. Find the activity you'd like to turn into artwork.
  3. Open the activity and click the three-dot menu.
  4. Choose Export GPX.
  5. Save the file, then upload it to our map builder.

Using your phone? Strava doesn't currently offer GPX exporting directly from its mobile app. Connecting your Strava account to TrailMaps is much easier.

Garmin Connect

If you record your adventures with a Garmin Edge, Forerunner, Fenix or another Garmin device, your activities are usually saved in Garmin Connect.

  1. Visit Garmin Connect on your computer and sign in.
  2. Go to Activities → All Activities.
  3. Open the activity you'd like to use.
  4. Click the settings cog in the top-right corner.
  5. Choose Export to GPX (or Export to TCX).
  6. Save the file and upload it to TrailMaps.

Tip: Make sure you're selecting a recorded activity with GPS data, rather than an indoor workout.

Wahoo

Using a Wahoo ELEMNT, BOLT or ROAM? If your rides are synced to Strava, you can skip downloading files altogether.

  1. Make sure your Wahoo activity has synced to Strava.
  2. Open our map builder.
  3. Select Connect with Strava.
  4. Choose your ride and start designing.

If your ride isn't in Strava, check your Wahoo app's connected services. You can connect Strava through the Authorized apps settings.

Wahoo also allows you to download recorded activities as FIT files, but these aren't currently listed as a supported upload format in our builder.

Komoot

You can download planned routes and completed activities from Komoot.

  1. Open Komoot or the Komoot app.
  2. Go to your Profile.
  3. Open Saved routes or Completed activities.
  4. Select the adventure you'd like to use.
  5. Choose Download GPX file.
  6. Save the file and upload it to TrailMaps.

Note: Komoot requires the region where your route begins to be unlocked before you can export it.

  1. Sign in to AllTrails.
  2. Open your profile and choose Activities.
  3. Select your activity.
  4. Open the three-dot menu and choose Download route.
  5. Select a GPX format, save the file and upload it to TrailMaps.

For a custom route saved in your AllTrails app, go to Saved → Custom routes & maps, open the route and look for Export route file.

OS Maps and other apps

Each print is made to order. Please allow around 1–4 working days for production before dispatch. Framed prints can occasionally take up to seven working days.

Delivery time is additional and depends on your location and chosen shipping method. Free worldwide delivery uses our economy service. If you choose a faster delivery option, this speeds up shipping once your print is ready; production time still applies.

Where has my GPX file gone?

Once downloaded, your file is usually in your device's Downloads folder.

  • iPhone or iPad: Open the Files app and look in Downloads, under iCloud Drive or On My iPhone.
  • Android: Open Files or My Files and check Downloads.
  • Mac or Windows: Open your Downloads folder.

Look for a file ending in .gpx, .tcx or .kml.

Do I need to have recorded the route?

You need a route with GPS location data. This can come from an activity you've recorded or a route you've planned in a compatible app.

Yes! If you're making a gift, ask them to send you their GPX file. You can upload it to TrailMaps and customise the artwork yourself.

Can I create a map without a GPX file?
